Guy Sebastian makes Official Song..Hmm?

.- The official hymn for World Youth Day in 2008 has just been chosen. “Receive the Power” is the title of the official hymn for the celebration of the 23rd World Youth Day in Sydney. The song was written by young Australian composer Guy Sebastian. “We were looking for a hymn which would be involving and inspiring”, WYD 2008 co-ordinator Bishop Anthony Fisher OP explained.

“Above all it had to be a song which would fill the young participants with enthusiasm and capture the essence of the World Youth Day theme chosen by the Pope: You will receive the power of the Holy Spirit which will descend upon you and you will be my witnesses. Guy's song meets with all these requisites: it inspires the youth of the world to accept Jesus' call to follow him to the ends of the earth as his witnesses. ”

Receive the Power was chosen after a selection process involving over 120 pieces. The Pontifical Council for the Laity, which is involved in preparations for WYD on the part of the Holy See, is in agreement with the choice of the hymn. “It combines the necessary musical and thematic elements as well as being easy to sing for people of different languages. We are convinced that Receive the Power WYD hymn will be played and sung by young Catholics everywhere on the occasion of World Youth Day and from then on”, the Bishop said.

Australian composer singer Guy Sebastian made a name for himself in 2003, when he started composing music for his parish at the age of thirteen. In 2005, Guy was nominated World Vision Ambassador and went to Uganda to film' a documentary on the difficulties people face there due to poverty and civil war. He has also written numerous songs for Australian singers.

Personal note: I thought Guy is a member of Hillsong Church? It turns out he's Catholic? Well there are Caths in Hillsong anyway.

Hey just thought i'd make mention that Guy Sebastion Won the first Australian Idol in 2003 and went on to only co-writes his own material. The person who actually penned this piece is Gary Pinto a succesful and most talented musical genniuss in his own right. He co-writes and writes for many Australian Music Artists and actually won the competition by himself and then Guy was brought on the scene for the recording. Gary is Catholic and you can see him on myspace/gazzapinto

Just an answer to the mis-information supplied by anonymous. They should get their facts straight. Guy was a songwriter before entering Idol and even won a song writing competition with a song called No More. Guy, along with other song writers, was asked to submit a song for WYD when the original entries were deemed not suitable. He wrote RTP himself and asked his friend Gary Pinto to look at it. Gary made some very minor changes. This is Guys' song, and Gary was a minor contributor, hence his name appears 2nd on the song writing credits. Guy has also written a number of songs for his church. Your post reflects not only your lack of knowledge but shows your real reason for making the post. To put down a very talented young musician.

He's Catholic? I thought he was Pentecostal. Isn't he?

correction ! Guy started in Paradise Community Church, the people who made PLANETSEEKERS CD and events possible. They are connected with the Assemblies of God--and hence --Pentecostal in nature.

About who made the song, I guess a direct interview would be good.

He may not be catholic but there was no requirement to be a catholic in the original competition. As I said he was asked to submit a song when there were none suitable in that competition. He is a very devout christian though. And also a very talented song writer. He also wrote songs for his church before entering Idol. Songs which are listened to all over the world via the Paradise cds. Most of the songs he has written have his name first in the songwriting credits, unlike some in the music industry. As I said, that is a sure sign of being the major contributor.

As to an interview uldtradust, to get to the truth, that might be difficult at the moment. He is recording an album of soul classics in Memphis with the legendary Steve Cropper, of Booker T & The Mgs fame. Steve also wants to write with him as well. You may not have heard of him but here is something that might make you understand what an honour it is for Guy to have him produce and play guitar on his album. A quote from a site dedicated to Steve Cropper.

"Cropper's legend was not limited to the United States. The Beatles were in awe of Cropper's playing and his production on Otis Redding records. In fact, when pressed as to who John Lennon and Paul McCartney may want to collaborate with, Steve Cropper's was the only name they mentioned.

The "Fab Four" approached Stax about recording in their studio, but word quickly got out, and fans (predominantly teenage girls) and the local press made it impossible for this to happen. Revolver is apparently the album that was to be recorded in Soulsville U.S.A.

Cropper is generally regarded as the most well known and influential Soul guitarist and because of his ability to adapt to many different styles, in 1996, he was named the greatest living guitar player (second all-time behind Jimi Hendrix) by Britain's Mojo Magazine. When asked what he thought of Cropper, the guitarist at number four, The Rolling Stones' Keith Richards, said "Perfect, man".

While this has nothing to do with World Youth Day or the song chosen, it does say a bit about Guy. The Beatles were in awe of the guitar playing and production of Steve Cropper, and wanted to collaborate with him. And Guy is getting the opportunity to do it all. So whether you get an answer straight from the man himself or not, rest assured that this is his song. He would not put his name to something which was not his. Why would he need to. Things are happening for Guy now that are going to be so big he does not need to lie to get somewhere. He is going somewhere with talent, not dishonesty.

I really really want to know why Duck Dunn, Lester Snell and Steve Cropper would want to work with a guy who sings mainly at shopping centres. (http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,20448603-661,00.html)

Is it just money, a quiet time in their careers or a challenge?

I can understand why Dianne Warren worked with Cosima since Warren can always let other people use her songs and is guarenteed a paycheck regardless of how well/badly Cosima does.
